The University of Toronto Institute of Aerophysics (UTIA) is officially established in a de Havilland aircraft hangar at Downsview airport in Ontario. The institute is created at the urging of Gordon N. Patterson as a conduit for Canadian research between the military, industry and academia along the lines of the relationship between JPL and CalTech. It would later change its name to the University of Toronto Institute For Aerospace Studies (UTIAS).
