NASA selected five American principal investigators and five Italian scientists for a joint U.S.-Italian Tethered Satellite System (TSS-1) project. The TSS-1, a deplorable subsatellite to be "tethered" to the Space Shuttle via a retractable cable, was expected to lift aboard Columbia in the fall of 1990. (NASA Release 87-46)

NASA Administrator Dr. James C. Fletcher announced NASA planned to develop an advanced solid rocket motor for the Space Shuttle (NASA Release 87-47)
