An Air Force Delta 2 launch vehicle carrying a NAVSTAR satellite was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The 126-foot Delta 2 placed the NAVSTAR navigation satellite in a preliminary orbit, from where it would boost itself into a 12,000-mile circular orbit. The NAVSTAR was the third of an eventual network of 21 satellites that would comprise the Global Positioning System, a highly accurate navigation system for military and commercial users.
