Two USAF HH-53 rescue helicopters successfully completed pioneer 14 500-km (9000-mi) ferry flight from Eglin AFB, Fla., to Da Nang, South Vietnam. Flight took nine days and included six stops. Mission fell two days behind when aircraft were grounded by bad weather in Alaska for 48 hrs. Longest nonstop leg was flown between Sheyma Island in Aleutians and Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, distance of 2700 km (1700 mi). USAF announcement had said crossing demonstrated capability of Military Airlift Command's aerospace rescue service to deploy rescue aircraft with inflight refueling "to meet any contingency worldwide." South Korea inaugurated world's 45th earth station for comsats at Kumsan, south of Seoul. Station, costing $6 million, was partly financed by U.S. Export-Import Bank loan. (AP, C Trib, 8/25/70)
