NASA launched two U.S. Navy navigational satellites aboard a Scout rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two Oscar satellites, each weighing 141 pounds, were placed into a 600-nautical-mile circular polar orbit. The Oscars were part of the Navy's all-weather, global navigation system. The Stacked Oscars on Scout-4 (SOOS-4) mission marked the fourth and final Scout launch for 1988. (SSR 1988 074A-G; NASA Release 88-116)
