Dr. J. Allen Hynek, head of Northwestern Univ.'s Dept. of Astronomy and USAF consultant on Ufo's, writing in Saturday Evening Post, offered four possible explanations for the UFO phenomena: (1) hoaxes or hallucinations; (2) military weapons being tested in secret; (3) something from outer space; (4) unknown natural phenomena. Of the 15,000 cases that had come to his attention, Hynek considered several hundred "puzzling" and perhaps one in 25 of puzzling incidents "bewildering." Because of these arresting cases, he urged serious study of Ufo's and suggested, as two initial steps to help solve the problem, computerization of data and improved photography of Ufo's.
