MEDIA ADVISORY: M12-031 NASA CHIEF TECHNOLOGIST TO VISIT DAYTON'S CRG WEDNESDAY
WASHINGTON -- NASA Chief Technologist Mason Peck will visit Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) in Dayton, Ohio on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. EST. Peck's visit will highlight how government can partner with small business to help create the jobs of the future through investment in science and technology. CRG has been the recipient of 18 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program contracts with NASA with a variety of different focuses, including projects such as creating inflatable structures for radio frequency antennas and, most recently, healable polymer matrix composites for future space vehicles. One of its earlier SBIR contracts, with NASA's Kennedy Space Center, led to the development of a new type of structural patch for a variety of consumer uses including Rubbn'Repair, for automotive uses; and Rec'Repair for the outdoors and adventure markets. Both are flexible, heat-activated structural patches. Peck and CRG's CEO and President Patrick Hood will be available to speak with reporters during a tour of the CRG facility at 2750 Indian Ripple Rd., in Dayton, beginning at 2 p.m. There also will be a photo opportunity with Peck and Hood during the tour. MEDIA ADVISORY: M12-030 NEW JERSEY EDUCATION CONSORTIUM HOSTS LIVE CHAT WITH SPACE STATION ASTRONAUTS
WASHINGTON -- Students and educators from Sussex County, N.J., will gather at Newton High School on Wednesday, Feb. 22, to further their space studies by speaking live with Expedition 30 Commander Dan Burbank and Flight Engineer Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station. The Earth-to-space communication will take place at 10 a.m. EST and be broadcast live on NASA Television. The students participating in the event range from kindergarten through 12th grade. They represent the Newton, Andover Regional and Green Township school districts in Sussex County, all of which are part of the Tri-District Curriculum Consortium. U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) is expected to join the group for this special event. The students participated in a variety of space-focused science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational initiatives in preparation for the space station downlink. They also designed a special patch to commemorate their interaction with the orbiting astronauts. This in-flight education downlink is one in a series with educational organizations in the United States and abroad to improve STEM teaching and learning. It is an integral component of NASA's Teaching from Space Program, which promotes learning opportunities and builds partnerships with the education community using the unique environment of space and NASA's human spaceflight program.
