Johann Wolfgang Goethe was one of the co-founders of the Gesellschaft für Weltraumforschung (GfW). He studied astronomy, meteorology and geophysics from 1936-1941. During his studies he was an assistant at the Frankfurt Observatory and the Planetary Institute, later director of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Society for Space Research (GfW), Berlin. Founder of the Southwest German Society for Space Research, Frankfurt a. M. 1947. Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society, London. Member of the British Astronomical Association, London. Member of the Astronomical Society, Göttingen. He wrote at least one small book on spaceflight in 1953 titled Weltraumfahrt - Utopie oder Wirklichkeit?.
