NASA, with Army as executive agent of a joint ABMA-JPL project, attempted Explorer satellite launch with Juno II booster, but it was destroyed 5½ seconds after launch by range safety officer.

Second largest reflector telescope in the world, the 120-inch telescope at the Lick Observatory; was dedicated.
