NASA launched the NOAA-A at 11:52 a.m. EDT from the Western Test Range (WTR) on an Atlas into an orbit with 823-kilometer apogee, 807-kilometer perigee, 101-minute period, and 98.7° inclination. It carried six devices to measure Earth's atmosphere, surface, and cloud cover, and near Earth proton/electron flux. It would also receive, process, and relay data from balloons, free-floating buoys, and remote automatic stations. Named NOAA 6 in orbit, it should have a 2-year lifetime.
