Program to gather daily weather data over the Pacific, North America, and the Atlantic with use of transonde balloons was inaugurated with the release of first balloon from NAS Iwakuni, Japan. Preset to float at 30,000 feet, balloons carried instruments which reported pressure and temperature every 2 hours in a 5- to 8-day flight terminating short of the European coast.
