General Dynamics Corporation said that it would build 18 rockets over the next five years to launch communications satellites. According to a company spokesman, General Dynamics would spend $100 million to start production of the Atlas-Centaur rocket. General Dynamics became the third U.S. company, together with McDonnell Douglas Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation, to attempt to move into launch vehicles production after the Challenger accident.
