Born in 1970, in Nagano, Japan. Married and has three children (a daughter and two sons). Enjoys golf, tennis and reading books.

Graduated from the Nozawa-kita High School, Nagano, in 1988; received a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the National Defense Academy in 1992; graduated Test Pilot Course (Japan) in 2003; graduated Command and Staff Course in Air Staff College (Japan) in 2004; graduated Joint Combined Warfighting School in Joint Forces Staff College (U.S. ) in 2006.

Entered the National Defense Academy in April 1988; appointed an Officer Candidate in 1992; promoted Second Lieutenant in 1993, and entered flight training courses (T-3, T-1, T-2 in Japan and T-38, AT-38 in U.S. Air Force); transferred to the 204th Squadron (F-15) in 1996; transferred to the National Defense Academy as training and guidance officer in 2000; transferred to the Air Development and Test Wing in 2002 (Test Pilot Course); entered Air Staff College in 2003; returned to Air Development and Test Wing in 2004, and worked as a chief test pilot of F-15 in 2006; transferred to Bilateral Operations Section in Joint Staff in 2006; transferred to Defense Plans and Program Division, Air Staff Office in 2008. Yui was selected as an Astronaut Candidate by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in February 2009; retired from the Japan Air Self Defense Force as Lieutenant Colonel in March and joined JAXA in April 2009. Yui has logged approximately 2,000 hours in a variety of aircraft.

[edit] Spaceflight Experience

NASA EXPERIENCE: Yui was selected in July 2009 as one of 14 members of the 20th NASA astronaut class. He recently graduated from Astronaut Candidate Training that included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in International Space Station systems, Extravehicular Activity (EVA), robotics, physiological training, T-38 flight training and water and wilderness survival training. Currently, he is assigned to the Robotics Branch.
