Having received 550 proposals, NASA's Office of Life and Microgravity Science and Applications awarded US$17 million to 168 scientists from 32 different states, to conduct microgravity research. NASA and the scientific community hypothesized that further investigation into the effects of low gravity on physical processes would lead to major advances in fluid physics and material sciences. The scientists hoped that if they could control the process of the formation of materials, they could develop and improve a wide range of materials and products, including metal alloys, semiconductors, ceramics, glasses, and polymers.
