David Lasser co-founder of the American Interplanetary Society and editor for Hugo Gernsback, sent out a long letter to his writers explaining his ideas of what made a good science fiction story. “It should deal realistically with the effect upon people, they should take us to far off places and times, and allow us to see vividly what an infinity of possible worlds there are. We are getting away from hackneyed plots and dime-novel melodrama…we are not inclined to look with favor on the hackneyed type of bug-and-insect stories, or the stereotyped huge-monster story.”
