The ion-propulsion engine on NASA's Deep Space 1 probe shut down suddenly after running for 4%minutes, the first time the probe had turned on its engine since the spacecraft's launch three weeks before. Ground controllers did not know the cause of the shutdown and made several unsuccessful attempts to restart the engine.
