The U.S.S.R. launched Intercosmos 12 from Plesetsk into an orbit with 697-km apogee, 241-km perigee, 94.0-min period, and 74.0° inclination. Tass reported that the satellite, intended to study the earth's atmosphere and ionosphere and the flow of micrometeorites, carried equipment made by specialists from Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, Romania, and Czechoslovakia, as well as the U.S.S.R.
