Shuttle Atlantis touched down at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, safely returning British-born U.S. astronaut C. Michael Foale to Earth after his 145-day stay aboard Mir. Foale's tenure in space was among the longest in NASA's history, surpassed only by Shannon W. Lucid's 188-day mission. Although Foale was determined to return to Earth's gravity in good physical condition, NASA doctors planned to keep the astronaut under medical supervision for several days.
