What is believed to have been a large piece of Encke's comet strikes the Tunguska region of Siberia during the Beta Taurid meteor shower. Evidence suggests that it exploded almost nine kilometers above the surface causing a massive air blast downwards. The blast destroyed approximately 2000 square kilometers of forested tundra.
