The Italian space agency announced that its star mapper satellite, Hipparcos 1, failed to boost itself into the proper orbit. Hipparcos 1 was launched aboard an Ariane 4 launch vehicle on August 8. The satellite's designers said that they would seek funds from the European Space Agency to build and launch a replacement satellite. (SSR 1989 062 A-D; NY Times, Aug 30/89)
