Magellan officially began its mission of mapping Venus on this date when it used radar to photograph the planet for the first time since radio contact was lost August 16. Computerized commands were radioed to the spacecraft, and confirmation that it had begun its 243-day chore was returned 13 minutes later. Pictures revealing mountains, valleys, and a unique looking meteor crater were received by scientists two days later. (P Inq, Sep 16/90; Sep 18/90; W Post, Sep 25/90)
