NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin appointed [[Edward J. Weiler] Acting Associate Administrator for NASA's Office of Space Science, effective immediately. Weiler had acted in the position since Wesley T. Huntress Jr.'s departure on 28 September. Since March 1996, Weiler had served as Science Director of the Astronomical Search for Origins and Planetary Systems within the Office of Space Science. He had been a program scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) since 1979.
