Pioneering efforts by Univ. of Rochester and other U.S., Soviet, and French laboratories to use lasers to control thermonuclear fusion were described in New York Times by Harry Schwartz. Experiments to tame hydrogen bomb's thermonuclear reaction to provide limitless, cheap, and pollution-free electricity had begun about 1950 before laser was invented. "But two decades of hard work have shown that had been anticipated. Now the laser is providing an alternative." (NYT, 11/22/70, 4:8)
