Plans for regional earth resources information system were announced at Marshall Space Flight Center by team of MSFC Summer Faculty Fellows headed by Dr. Reginald I. Vachon of Auburn Univ. and physicist Herman G. Hamby of MSFC Environmental Applications Office. System-Earth Resources Information Storage, Transformation, Analysis and Retrieval (ERISTAR)-would gather and correlate data from instrumented packages into data cross- sections useful in industrial development, conservation of natural resources, and pollution reduction. Information would be made available to Alabama Earth Resources Information Committee. Developed by team during 11-week stay at MSFC, system would assist in disseminating information from Erts I Earth Resources Technology Satellite, launched July 23. (MSFC Release 72-105)

Pravda editorial praised U.S.S.R.'s Venus 8 Venus probe: "A striking new page has been written in the annals of Soviet and world cosmonautics. After a 4-month flight the Venus-8 automatic interplanetary station reached Venus and its descent apparatus made history's first floating descent through the atmosphere on the light side of the morning star, making a soft landing on the planet's surface. This remarkable scientific experiment is another vivid demonstration of the great potential of unmanned spacecraft in studying space and the planets of the solar system. The Venus-8 station has brilliantly continued the impressive sequence of . . . unmanned spacecraft, which have provided world natural science with so much valuable information about the universe."
