DOD launched a Block 5D defense meteorological satellite (DMSP) from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., at 11:22 a.m. local time on a Thor booster into an orbit with 837-kilometer apogee, 818-kilometer perigee, 101.5-minute period, and 98.8° inclination. DOD made no announcement, but Aviation Week & Space Technology reported that the 1,131-pound spacecraft would be tested for about 15 days before being put into operation in its nearpolar Sun-synchronous orbit.
