MSFC said the propellant tank for Columbia's engines was ready for flight and would leave the Michoud Assembly Facility June 29 for KSC, where it would be fitted to the orbiter and two solid-fuel racket boosters. The Martin Marietta-built 154-foot tank with 140,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and 380,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen was the only part of the Shuttle assembly that was expendable; like the boosters, it would separate from the Shuttle at about 75 miles altitude and drop into the ocean but would not be recovered.
