Astronauts Jerry L. Ross and James H. Newman undertook a 4%-hour-long spacewalk, to install 40 electrical and data connectors linking the U.S.-built connecting module Unity with the Russian-built power module Zarya. The pair also bolted handrails to the side of Unity and photographed two of Zarya's backup docking antennas, which had failed to deploy. Russian ground controllers sent commands to power up Zarya, jump-starting Unity's electrical systems. Ross and Newman then removed thermal covers from Unity's outside computers to prevent overheating.
