NASA announced that it would participate in the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People's (NAACP) national Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition, to be held in conjunction with the groups' annual convention in July. Two thousand high school students, representing 600 cities, were scheduled to compete for national honors. NASA scientists and engineers were to participate as science fair judges. National winners would receive certificates from NASA and a sponsored visit to a NASA Field Center.

Astronaut Bernard Harris, M.D., who completed his first Space Shuttle in May, was also scheduled to participate in several convention activities. (NASA Media Advisory)
