A Russian space capsule containing a cut-glass replica of the Statue of Liberty and greetings from Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off Washington state. The Resource 500 satellite was billed as Russia's first private space launch and honored the 500th anniversary of the voyage of Columbus in 1492.
