The media covered the Galileo's approach to the asteroid Gaspra, within which it was scheduled to fly 1,000 miles, making the first relatively close-up pictures of an asteroid. On October 29, Galileo took photographs of Gaspra as it flew by, but because its main antenna remained jammed the images could not he transmitted until the malfunction was fixed.
