September 4-10: Farnborough (England) Air Show emphasized Anglo- European aerospace cooperation. For first time aircraft, engines, electronics, and equipment of European manufacturers were displayed at formerly predominantly British show. Some 300 companies from U.K., Europe, British Commonwealth, and U.S. were represented. Twenty official government missions attended, with 5000 official guests from 120 countries, including 17 Chinese- interested in Anglo-French Concorde supersonic transport-and large group of Soviet observers. On Sept. 4, demonstration flight by Lockheed TriStar jet transport with British Rolls-Royce engines preceded demonstration flight by Concorde. Member of U.K. Environment Ministry said TriStar was "pointing the way to a silent future in the sky." He wished Concorde were "as quiet as the TriStar." Spokesman for British Aircraft Corp. said quieter and cleaner engines would be fitted to operational model of Concorde. (Cerutti, C Trib, 9/6/72, 28; Pinder, AP, P Inq, 9/7/72, 27)
