Responding to evidence that Earth's protective ozone layer is thinning or disappearing faster than was forecast, environmental officials from 81 countries met in Copenhagen to consider revising the Montreal Protocol on the control of substances that attack ozone. The main point of the meeting, sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program, was to set a timetable for the phaseout of chlorofluorocarbons, halons, and carbon tetra-chloride. General Electric said that it had agreed to sell its aerospace business to defense giant Martin Marietta for $3 billion. The deal would take General Electric out of the defense business and make Martin Marietta the world's largest aerospace electronics company.
