After five cancelled launch attempts, an Air Force Delta 2 launch vehicle was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, carrying a NAVSTAR navigation satellite. The NAVSTAR was the second of a planned network of satellites known as the Global Positioning System, which would allow military units to determine their position any-where on Earth within 50 feet.
