This date marked the thirtieth anniversary of the first hypersonic flight of the X-15 experimental rocket plane. North American Aviation pilot A. Scott Crossfield was at the controls for the first flight. The X-15 research aircraft flew a total of 199 flights in what is widely regarded as one of the most successful aeronautical research programs ever conducted. (NASA Release 89-82, May 30/89)
