According to Patrick McCormick of NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines might cool global temperatures by a few tenths of a degree for as long as five to 10 years. (W Post, Aug 14/91)

NASA announced that its Soft X-ray Telescope, which is designed to study solar flares, was scheduled to be launched aboard a Japanese spacecraft on August 26, under a cooperative agreement with the Japanese. (NASA Release 91-130)
